In a show of blatant favoritism at the end, Hermione hugs Harry and then awkwardly *shakes hands* with Ron. But, I guess those two didn't get off to a brilliant start, so... maybe that's it.

No, I think it'sa bit different from that. It's easy to hug something that you are friends with but it's much harder to hug someone you actually fancy. (sorry, as one of my only straight pairings, I feel oliged to wave my pro Ron/Hermione flag wherever I roam!) And the expression on their faces! It's definietely a "Er...I can't hug you, I like you!" scene.
