I've listen to philosopher who went through something similar, with the whole poor lady begging for money thing. One day when he was out with some people someone begged him for money for food, so he gave them some money and left it at that. The people who he was with didn't understand why he did it claiming that they could have been a drug addict or something and he replied something to the effect of:
"It was a gift to them and it is not my choice on what they do with it. But they may look back on it someday and remember that someone was kind to them."
