Zero Two Manga

Okay, yeah. I got my Digimon 02 manga in the mail today, and was very happy. And here's my opinion on them.

I was already expecting a few things, having been through the whole first season in manga form already. For one, dub names are all used. Daisuke is Davis, Miyako is Yolei, Iori is Cody, and etc. However, Davis starts us off by introducing himself as Daisuke Motomiya and saying that his friends call him Davis. Why? Dunno. But they do.

The story is massively edited, just like the first season. How else can you fit 50 episodes into two volumes of manga? There were a bunch of changes, mostly to save space. Examples? Izzy, Yolei, and Cody are there on the first trip, and everyone finds their digimentals at the same time, in a nice neat row. Same with the second digimentals, although there were only three of those and that happens later in the manga. Sora, Matt, Joe, and Mimi aren't in the first book at all because of this. Also, Izzy, TK, and Kari fall through the computer to meet with Tai all of three pages in, leaving Davis to gawp after them.

This leads to another point: no one believes Davis. Ever. Yolei and Cody have a great laugh when he tries to tell them the others were eaten by a computer, and NO ONE else believes that Ken is the Emperor until about five pages after Davis finds out, when the whole Agumon-has-a-spiral thing was going on.

And... Ken. Ah, yes, Ken. Angst sponge of 02. As with the first season, about 99% of the angst is cut. The stuff about Sam is still there, but is randomly explained to the others by, of all people, *Tai*. TAI?? How the hell does TAI know??? He just comes in out of nowhere after Magnamon destroys Chimeramon and starts rambling on. And then Ken shows up again later, all good and pretty (yes, he IS called pretty several times) and full of apologies, and of course it takes the others twice as long to forgive him as it takes Davis to decide they can't live without him.

I was also expecting to see a lot of the same treatment given to the Davis/Ken interaction that Taichi/Yamato got in season one - meaning, cut out. But NO. Most of that was left in this time. The soccer match is there. The unconditional forgiveness is there. The rivalry-and-then-strong-friendship is there. The begging scene is... gone. But the jogress stuff is still pretty neat.

They also didn't cut out the crushes - that is, Davis's crush on Kari, and Yolei's crush on Ken. Which was neat. Unfortunately, they didn't cut the epilogue either, although I suppose that's a mixed blessing since it's the only time we see Mimi in the 02 manga AT ALL. They didn't even explain where she went! I thought she might've been killed in a terrible car accident or something.

Bah... anyway. Random complaints aside, the 02 manga was pretty good. The artwork is kinda neat, anyway.

And you can check out scans here.

** Fun Quotes **

Izzy: Prodigious. (He HAD to say it. Or I would've cried)

Yolei: Ken! Marry me - I'm harmless!

Davis: Good things come to those who get the early bird. That's me, the early... wait.

Yolei: K-Ken? Is that you?
Tai: Davis was right.
Cody: How'd he get his hair to do *that*?

Davis: Yaa! Surrender, Ken, before I - Oh. A gold box?

Davis: Whaddya say we bounce, homeslice?
Ken: I'd like that.
TK: Did he just call Ken "homeslice"?

Davis: (narration) Right, so Arukenimon was planning on messing up the DigiWorld the old-fashioned way - breaking important stuff.

Davis: I think that guy needs one of those Chicken Soup books.

Izzy: Can things get any worse?
Davis: (narration) I thought we told Izzy to quit saying that.

Oh! I just read one of those in the bookstore today! The random ghetto-slang had me in hysterics!

Cody: True dat.

When does Daisuke call Ken 'homeslice'? *dies* that wasn't in the one I saw! (or I missed it 'cuz I was skimming..)

Oh, and Daemon calling Ken 'the pretty one'! Yeah, that was great!

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed. Partly because I have this knee-jerk reaction to the dub names, I guess, so I was gone right from the very begininng! Some of the quotes were very good though, I admit. I dunno... I'll probably end up buying it, just because, but I do wish Tokyopop had done a better job, y'know?

Oh the slang. *dies laughing* I was skimming through it and when I saw Daisuke calling Ken "homeslice"... omg, I started laughing out loud. The shop owners now think I am insane. XD

Oh, yeah, Tokyopop in general aren't that bad. (I mean, hell, it's better than them not existing at all, right?) It's just... sometimes they get it so, so wrong, you have to laugh.

I finally got a chance to look at the scans you have up. The one you have marked as yuri, if you look in the lower left corner of the panel where Yolei and Kari are holding hands, Davis has the most adorably confused look on his face. "Why are they holding hands? I don't get it." *laughs*

And the fake ghetto language is awful. It makes me brain bleed.

But... but.... Ken's nose. It turned into a tiny pizza!

It's just that it looks like a tiny triangle-shadow in every picture where you see him from the side.

Proud announcement: I showed these pics to Kinslayer, and while we were cruising the site we bumped your allotted data transfer rate up past the acceptable limit. I think the fatal moment was when we both went to check out all the random pics where Daisuke is groping Ken.

Even more fun to add...

Here's a bit of info on homeslice (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ice_is_blue/1487.html). Also... *evil grin* in regarding that same 'homeslice' portion of Zero Two Vol 1, in the next panel it shows their feet and the sound fx: "TUP TUP TUP" .... I know I'm not the only one who's heard of 'tup' being used as slang for having sex.

According to here (http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/ZT.HTM), (1) "Tup is British slang for to have sexual intercourse." According to here (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=tup), 'Tup' is (2) "to excessively grope members of the same sex as yourself" or (3) "to have sex with a female goat". Personally, of the three definitions, I've heard of the first and third, I vote for the first in this particular usage, and I'm quite amused by the second (but that dictionary allows definition submissions from the internet and there's no way to track how widely spread that usage is).

Somebody knows what's going on with the fangirls over at TOKYOPOP... I mean... if you're going to have sound effects for running, it would be 'tap' or something, right? But *tup* ??? ^______________^ Uh-huh. I admire the skill displayed at inserting innocently disguised shounen ai. *tips hat in salute*

Due to RL events, I've had the second volume of Zero Two since Monday, but I haven't been able to do more than flip through it. I'll probably do a post on it once things have settled down.

Getting a glimpse at this, I'm not sure it's something I would be satisfied with if I'd paid money for it, just considering how much it looks like they cut out.

My friend calls me "homeslice" all the time. It's super annoying. He also calls me "dude" and occasionally leaves me notes that start with "howdy." I want to slap him but I know he just wouldn't understand.

What's homeslice?
