Backwards Progress

Oh wow. One of many, MANY reasons I am fervently glad that I am not American.

Check this out

And, apparently, this *isn't* censorship? There's a hole in this guy's logic somewhere. As soon as you start saying 'You can't write about this' or 'We're going to ban books on this', IT IS CENSORSHIP! Get over yourself!

Someone want to confirm for me if this is true? Is there really a dickhead like this in power? On second thought, don't. I think I'd rather pretend this is a completely false article.

Those people do indeed exist. However, I was unaware they were THAT FUCKING STUPID. I sense violence in the future - and I mean that in a resigned, it'll probably happen kind of way. We Americans are good at picking fights in order to get our way. It's too bad we're not much good at anything else *sigh*

I am so not surprised. *sigh* It's not censorship because it's "morally right," which goes along with their ideas of what consistutes right (i.e. what they think is right). Look at the Iraq invasion. But there have been local movements to ban particular books for years. And don't forget stuff like the uproar (http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/censorship/a/burningbooks.htm) over the Harry Potter books promoting devil-worship (witchcraft).

It's so lame, it's hard to believe it really happens. >_

Ooh! Thanks for putting that up. I now know what my next talk to my psychology class will be on. Lots of fun for me at least--even though I do believe that is extremely stupid.

Yet another reason to be ashamed of my country. Look out Canada, here I come!

Nekojita posted that link too in her LJ... and so when I read it through a second time I was expecting myself to be a bit less horrified and shocked... from numbness if nothing else. But, nope, still pissed and disgusted as hell. At this point I'm kicking myself for not waiting and simply going to grad school at UBC in Canada. It would have made it easier to find a job there, I imagine. My one shining ray of hope (which is pretty disgusting and misguided in its own right) is that once the older generation kicks off, the morons that have produced moronic offspring will have neglected to educate them to the point that they -can't- get into politics. Of course, looking at President Monkey-Boy certainly doesn't encourage that prospect. That said, I think younger people, in general, are more tolerant and that things will get sorted out eventually (possibly with bloodshed and riots)... but it's goes to show how backwards the U.S. politicians are that positive changes can't be made now. I'm just happy to be living in California. I'm not sure what my mental state of health would be if I lived in a place where attitudes were less friendly. My best wishes go out to those who are stuck in that unfortunate situation. ....Any room in your backyard for me?
