(no subject)

For anyone who might have some vague glimor of hope that LJ is actually trying to do the right thing in all their stupidity, I'd like to direct your attention to this.

So, in summary, it is okay to encourage girls to starve themselves but not okay to post pictures/fiction of imaginary people who may or may not be underage having sex.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this picture?

NOTE: I don't necessarily support this user's methods - I'm just commenting on LJ's hypocricy.

I really disagree with the way she went about her complaint.

LJ has already been made aware of the problem and that users find it distasteful. Going to the media as she did is nothing short of blackmail instead of opening a channel of communication which is what many users have been trying to do. It shows ignorance of what has been going on and what is the biggest issue with LJ right now (lack of communication and clarity, not that they are targeting child porn).

Plus, how does this make her/use users any different from Warriors of Innocence? It's the exact same tactic; if you don't do what we say, we're going to take it outside.

I definitely find a lot of the way she's handled this to be less of a "I'm trying to set something right" approach as more of a "I'm going to get even" one.

I agree with you; I'm rather upset about LJ's inconsistent policy but seeing as how LJ is willing to listen to us (albeit a bit slowly but I suspect this has more to do with their business practice up until now), taking it to the media should be a final resort.

I'll be pissed at her if because of this, there are more problems in the future.

*shrugs* I don't either, but what she's doing feels more like a witch hunt than was LJ did (but I am not condoning their actions either).

I think...there's a severe disconnect between what users expect out of LJ (especially fandom; we tend towards the privileged side of the spectrum) and what LJ is willing/can do. LJ is, first and foremost, a business. They have to do their business-y things and that will sometimes mean catering more to corporate sponsors than the users because, yeah, those corporate sponsors are probably making a lot of things that we take for granted possible.

That's not to say that the users are just a side project; just that we aren't as high up on their list as we assume. And for fandom, since we chose to make LJ our homebase, I think we have this feeling that LJ owes us something. BECAUSE we chose LJ over any other blog resource, BECAUSE we spend money on icons, BECAUSE we've made LJ big (that last one I don't think is actually true, but try telling fandom that).

Haha...I'm coming off as really cynical. And maybe I am. I'm pissed at LJ and I'm pissed at fandom. Sooner or later, I just might decide to take my toys out of both sandboxes and play in the ocean.

You know, I was involved in the ED community for a year and a half two years ago. This (http://hungerbound.livejournal.com/95158.html) is a response to that petition. It's not from the HP side of the fence, but the ED side of the fence. . . . I think it's interesting.
