Anime Evolution 2007

Well, I am back at home (at work, actually) safe and sound after an exciting and stressful weekend.

Like I said in the previous post, Cody got sick on the first day of our trip. He was well enough to attend the convention and participate in the cosplay skit, which was good, but he was feeling weak and drained for most of the time. He also couldn't eat much. But he did still have fun.

Basically on the Friday we got all dressed up in our costumes and headed out to the convention. Cody and I caught the opening ceremonies, which were really boring (never going to those again). After that, we met up with the rest of the group in the cosplay to practice and then hit the venders with everyone. Cody hit the jackpot in the doujinshi section, where he found $350 worth of Tales of the Abyss and Suikoden V doujins. He got a $50 discount for spending so much. I picked up some CCS, D.Gray-Man, HikaGo, and Gundam Seed books. All either gen or het except for the HikaGo, which is odd for me. I also bought an Onegai Twins box set for pretty cheap and a Tsubasa Chronicles poster.

As usual, we were a pretty mismatched group with our various costumes. I got a bunch of great pictures of other people in cosplay as well, which I'll post on facebook and link here when they're on my computer and resized.

Friday was also the first night for Anime Idol (a singing contest where you have to sing anime, jpop, or jrock songs). Since Jeremy and his friend Karmen were both finalists, we all went to cheer them on. They passed on to the second round on Saturday, which was right after the cosplay. I taped both performances and the critiques from the judges.

After we got back from the con that night, Cody treated everyone to dinner at the bar and grill in the hotel. He didn't eat much, but it was still a fun night.

The next morning, he felt nauseous again. I had to run up and buy him some medicine (the least drowsy stuff they had). He insisted on getting up and going to the con, because he wanted to be in the cosplay skit. After taking the medicine he felt much better and even regained a lot of energy before the skit.

I met up with [livejournal.com profile] mackzazzle before gathering for the cosplay, which was cool! First time I've ever met an online friend in person. She was dressed up as Rhode from D.Gray-Man, and looked awesome. If I'd had my camera on me, I would've snapped a picture, but I'd already handed it off to Holly to tape us in the cosplay skit. Boo.

Just before meeting up with everyone, we ran to Artist's Alley and grabbed some posters from the creator of VG Cats and had him sign them. He seemed really nice, and the posters look fantastic.

The skit went off with a minimum of fuss (for the most part we remembered our lines), and then we settled down and watched the rest of the cosplay. There were some really neat ones. We didn't win, but with our kind of thrown-together skit, I didn't really expect to. It was a lot of fun and made people laugh, which is all we were really after.

The second round of Anime Idol was right after the cosplay, and again I taped Jeremy's and Karmen's performances. Jeremy didn't make it to the next round, but Karmen was in the final three, which was on the last day of the con at the closing ceremonies.

After that, we all headed back to the hotel to have a soak in the pool and get ready for dinner. Cody was feeling well enough by then to join us, so it was a lot of fun. We had to make a long skytrain ride and then a bit of a walk to get to the restaurant for dinner. The place we went to was The Olde Spaghetti Factory in Gastown. There were 15 of us, so we'd had to make reservations the night before, but everything worked out great. The food was excellent, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

On Sunday, we skipped out on the con and went to the mall to give Cody a chance to shop around (and also Anika since she'd arrived after we went the first time). I picked up a figurine set from Onegai Twins and a box set of the first season of Kaleido Star, which I've only seen bits and pieces of but thought I'd take a chance on. I also grabbed a couple of anime movies that looked kinda good. Cody found a box set of Star Ocean EX and snatched it up as well. We all had lunch at the food court in the Crystal Mall and hung around just checking out various stores. Then we went up to the con for the closing ceremonies and the last round of Anime Idol.

Karmen gave a really awesome performance, but ended up coming in third. I thought she should've won, but what can you do? The other two girls were fantastic as well. I taped Karmen, and will probably post that (along with everything else) on YouTube when I get a chance to edit it.

After that, we all headed home. We made plans to meet up at the Abbotsford gas stop for dinner but that got a little derailed by the accident on the highway outside of Vancouver. We were stuck in traffic for quite a while, and all the cars in our group arrived at different times. We were only all there for a brief time together. Oh well...

We ended up getting back home around 1:30am and to bed (after unloading my car) around 2am. Thank god I switched my 7:30am shift today for a 2pm shift. It could've been a pretty ugly day.

For next year's con, our group has (finally) decided on a costume theme. We're going to try and put together a Slayers cosplay group. I'm dressing up as Filia, so we'll see how that goes. Should be interesting.
