Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - OVA
Given that I mentioned in my review of the original Kimi ga Nozomu Eien that I wouldn't really care to revisit this series, it may seem strange that I downloaded and watched this new 'season two' OVA. The reason I did is because this new OVA is actually not a sequel (as the 'second season' part implies) but a re-write of the ending where the love triangle is resolved differently.
Basically, Takayuki has chosen to pick up his romance with Haruka (where they left off three years ago) instead of leaving to continue his relationship with Mitsuki. It's crystal clear that this is the least healthy of his choices, for everyone concerned. Haruka's view of the world won't have changed from before her accident, and he's had three years to grow and develop a relationship with Mitsuki. The ending in the first one seemed best for everyone concerned: Takayuki and Mitsuki leave town to start a new life together and really develop things between them, and Haruka moves on with adjusting to life after her accident. Everyone is moving forward. You can't improve on that, right?
Well... I think the main reason I watched this OVA is because I never liked Mitsuki that much (just couldn't forgive her some of the things she did) and was really curious about what would happen if she did not get the guy after all. Not the best reason in the world, but whatever.
I'll give the OVA points for three things. One, it didn't ignore the fact that Takayuki has changed a lot since their relationship three years ago, but Haruka has not (this was actually the main point of conflict). Two, it gave a bit more time and exploration to people and things that weren't explored in great detail in the original. And three, it actually had a scene between Haruka and Mitsuki that gave attention to the lost friendship between the two of them (something I thought should have gotten more attention, since I found it one of the most tragic things about the story). The scene was fairly weak, but at least it was something.
For the most part, though, this OVA was nothing special. Takayuki had absolutely zero conflict, which was boring. Haruka's conflict wasn't that convincing, and it felt like it took way too long to resolve something that ended up with a really quick, easy resolution anyway. Plus, the chemistry between Takayuki and Haruka really seemed to lack something. I don't know what it was.
In any case, this OVA wasn't that great. The original series was better - even though I'd still never watch it again and still don't like Mitsuki that much.
Oh well.
