So I just watched this video by The Nostalgia Chick: here.
She makes a good point about "tokenism", and I guess I could speak about that for a bit, but... but... I must be the only one who watched the scene where she shows the list of Nick cartoons and sought out and found Avatar: The Last Airbender on the list, and thought, 'okay, I know the main character is male, but COME ON! Doesn't it at least deserve a mention? It has some of the best female characters I've seen in a North American cartoon, like, ever.'
Just watch this video.
... Yeah, I'm a nerd. I know it.

I'm not really faulting her for not including it, because there could be any number of reasons why she wouldn't. Maybe she hasn't seen it, or hasn't seen enough of it to feel it was in any way progressive with its treatment of female characters. Maybe she's only looking for series where the main character is female, like you said. Or maybe she didn't care about it one way or another. Who knows?
I'm really just expressing my nerdy obsession with the show by saying that, in my opinion, it was worth a mention. :) I was really happy with how the female characters were handled.
