A Wizard of Mars
So, my copy of 'A Wizard of Mars' arrived yesterday, and I finished reading it today.
Yeah, it was good.
A lot of people mentioned that the beginning was a little slow, and I have to agree up to a point. Yes, I'd say up unti Kit goes back up to Mars by himself, it reads a little slower, but I honestly preferred it that way. It felt like the book was picking up momentum. Also, it's been a while since the last book and I needed that time to remember the status of all of the characters. So, slow, yes, but not in a bad way.
From there on, I had a hard time putting the book down. This one definitely isn't as epic as some of the others, but it was satisfying to see Nita pulling attitude and delivering some pretty serious threats. In general, I was impressed with Nita in this book. I've always liked her character, though.
The subtle build-up to the Kit/Nita at the end was nice, too. Can't say I didn't enjoy that after 10+ years of waiting for it. Honestly, most of the development I was looking for was on Kit's end, since we've had some hints that Nita had feelings for him in earlier books. I can appreciate the denial, particularly when it takes such an eye-opening event to make him realize it WAS denial. The end is perfect. I can't say I would've objected to a kiss or two, but the way it worked out was just so right for those two. Very satisfying.
It must be noted that it took me several readings to understand the time talk near the end of the book. I'm still not entirely sure I follow, but I think I've got the basic idea. I'm just glad these books never really dumbed any of the concepts down. When I was a young adult, I always appreciated being taken seriously.
I gotta say, a lot of the appeal of these books in general and Nita and Kit as characters in particular is the geek factor. I am a geek, and understand that this is a good thing. I relate to other geeks and get excited over geeky things. I love Nita and Kit for being geeks without being stereotypes. It's refreshing.
There are still some loose plot threads hanging about, so I suspect there will be at least one more book. I'm looking forward to it! I can always use more Kit and Nita, but I'd like to see more of Dairine as well. I am curious about what happened to Roshaun, too. Man, the characters in this series are all just so likeable! I care about them all, even side characters. I want to see them get their happy endings.
But then again, I've always been a happy endings kind of reader. That's what it's all about for me.
