Well, I finished watching the last Hunter X Hunter OVA yesterday... It makes me sad that it's over, even though I still have the manga and the musicals to go through. It's just not quite the same.

Anyway, though, here are my thoughts on the OVAs.

The First OVA: Surprisingly, considering this one focusses on my favorite character and the other two don't have much of him at all, this was my least favorite of the three OVAs. It was very good, though - the animation is of better quality than the series, the plot continues smoothly, and there's a lot going on. I felt the ending was somewhat anti-climactic, but that's also because this contention hasn't really been resolved yet.

Greed Island OVA: This OVA seemed to be more of a bridging series than anything - it takes us away from the events of the first OVA and introduces us to the events of the third OVA. I must note that the opening theme for this one is my favorite Hunter X Hunter song. Also, the animation is very good and the concept of the game is introduced well, even if I had trouble remembering at first. I expected to be a little bored by Greed Island, since Leorio and Kurapika aren't really in the arc at all, but it ended up totally sucking me in.

Greed Island Final OVA: Now, here is where the interesting stuff happens. HERE we see Gon and Killua actually begin to *play* the game, after having trained enough to become capable. There are little side-arcs (the jyounen user) but generally, everything going on here is about playing the game. I really, really love this idea. I'm not a gamer, but I like watching people play, especially RPGs - and this is like the ultimate RPG. (in much the same way as The World in .hack//Sign) I like the character of Bisquit, I like the conflicts Gon and Killua are faced with, and I thought the end - although FRUSTRATING as hell - was actually not too bad, for a series that continues on in manga form beyond that point.

All in all, I enjoyed the OVAs. Hopefully they'll animate more of the manga, because in my opinion, the anime just improves everything.

In other news, I started working on the Hunter X Hunter 20 Themes, which were posted on one of the LJ communities by someone who'd already done them. So far I've done 8, in a series of drabbles, double drabbles, and one drabble and a half. I'm hoping to get a full-sized fic out of at least one of the themes, but we'll have to see, I guess.

And now, I work. Evil work...

*pat* I felt the same way when I finished the series.

What's so frustrating about the end of GI final? They finally get to see Gon's dad right?

:D GI's RPG totally trumped Hack sign's. Hack dusk might have been on par with GI though.
