Ranting. Heh.

Argh. Okay. I paid a trip over to [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_rants. And I really shouldn't have - all it's doing is pissing me off. I thought it'd be fun, really. Maybe I'd see some poking-fun at stupid cliches in bad fanfiction.

Too much stupidity, though. Seriously. Every time I think I've come across a sane poster, they someone bring it back to that evil, EVIL point that is the defense of the self-proclaimed "sane" yaoi fan.

"Well, yeah, I like yaoi as much as the next person, but come on, you can't just make perfectly straight characters gay, right?"

Watch me bang my fists on the ground in frustration. The HELL? How can so many people agree with this opinion and not see the complete and utter bullshit it is?

It's intolerance disguised as tolerance! The FUCK you are open-minded! Who's to say which characters are "perfectly straight" anyway? You? Suppose I don't agree with you? Then I guess I'm rabid and stupid, since obviously you have the last word on the subject. I'd better consult you before I decide to like a pairing, or I might look stupid. Right?

Save me from patronizing nitwits! I have reasons for my choices - just because you don't buy them doesn't mean they're not valid. Shut the hell up and leave me alone if you don't have anything productive to say. I don't criticize YOUR choice of pairings, so leave mine the hell alone.

I'm sick and tired of people who connect pairing to badfic. Just because someone writes a certain pairing doesn't automatically make their fic BAD. Conversely, this also doesn't mean it's GOOD. The quality of the fic depends on the skill of the writer and their ability to handle characterization believably. NOT on the pairing.

Pairing has nothing to do with it! Every pairing has its share of badfic. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that if you look at things proportionately, most pairings probably have close to the same ratio of badfic to goodfic as others. Some pairings have more written for them, so the number of badfic is larger. Does this make the pairing bad? No. It makes those particular fics bad.

If you feel the urge to associate pairing with badfic, go take a look through your own pairing's fandom and ask yourself honestly how many fics THERE are bad.

Badfic is everywhere. It's not limited to yaoi, to het, or to any one particular pairing. It's a staple in fandom. Nothing makes your pairing inherently better than mine, no matter how "canon" you think it is.

So, pull your head back out of your ass and get over it.

I can really bitch with the best of them, can't I?

personally, I think it's a lot of fun to write non-canon pairings, or the "normal" pairings in yaoi. like digimon-taito is fun and all, but sometimes it's fun to write/read other pairings too. kouchi/taishiro ones especially. and most of the taishiro fics I've read have been written particularly well. you're right, badfic has nothing to do with pairing. I don't know how people got that idea in the first place @_@

bah. no pairing can really be "better" than others. all pairings have good and bad points about them. people can be crazy sometimes XD

This would be one of the reasons I tend to avoid a lot of fandom. Narrow minded people who declare they are right and all the "Me TOO!" people that follow them.

This is also the reason why I accept all pairings. It's just easier and I don't care. Hell, I'll read just about anything by an author that I like because I know that the writing will be good (case in point, I just read Ed/Al fic by Kinslayer. I don't even read FMA fanfic). People have tried for hours to find a pairing that I would refuse to read and failed. They can't grasp the idea that, no really, it doesn't matter as long as the writing is good and the justification is there.

I am these people's worse nightmare. A smart, calm, yaoi-loving writer who won't argue with them and really will read any pairing.

That's generally my philosophy. If you can make it work? Coolness. I think the only time I've ever written fanfiction is just to prove that yes, it is possible to make X pairing work. There are pairings I don't like, but that's usually just b/c I've never read a fic that made it work. I love being proven wrong.

1) "Perfectly straight" characters = bullshit. Not only are the majority of these "perfectly straight" characters never seen to be interested in girls either, but even people in the real world can change sexuality overnight (when it gets to breaking up canon couples, it gets more complicated, but that argument still hurts)
2) I know that I ranted on this exact topic a month ago, but... SO agreed. Arguing that a couple is "bad" because all the fanfics are crap/all the fans are stupid is about as stupid as arguing that all Christians are homophobic because they believe in God.
3) The funniest thing is, the reason that comm was started was apparently because some of the members where sick of all the idiots on the other one.

It's not that I have a PROBLEM with breaking up canon couples. Heck, I DETEST most canon couples in stories where romance isn't the actual focus. It's just that in a lot of fanfics where somebody are paired up with somebody else than who they were with canonically, it's usually just written off with "they broke up". And that can be okay, but if the romance in question actually had something to say for the story, there needs to be SOME explanation. And unfortunately, that is something a lot of stories are lacking - and it looks sloppy at best.
So, I'm all for breaking up canon couples. It just gets on my nerves when people can't do it decently.

It's best to have a good giggle it and then move on ^^; You're right, of course, that very rarely is a character's sexuality spelled out in stone, and yet I wonder, would these people have a problem if an established gay character was written into het?

Nicely said.

I find it pretty hot when "perfectly straight" men are molded into gay fucktoys under my careful tutelage. :)

In the end, what kills me is that it's fandom. Isn't the entire point of fandom to enjoy and see what we probably never will in cannon? To show our love for this or that? So why do so many see fit to say what is wrong or right? Because, to be perfectly honest, every last piece of fandom is wishful thinking. Be it yaoi, het or otherwise. If it's not cannon? It's wrong. This is all for fun. If you don't like the playground? Go find another.
