FMA: Brotherhood

Cody and I finished watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood last week.

It started off kind of shaky - the first episode is pretty full of setup for the running gags, character introduction, and pointless activity. Then the series proceeds to plow through material that was covered in the first anime, although much closer to the original manga canon.

The series takes a while to get into its stride, but it does get there in the end. Like most people, I'd say stick around until episode 20 or so at least. The story starts to pick up around then.

Although, honestly, for me it was in episode 15, when the new series did its clear split from the original and our visitors from Xing show up. By which I mean Ling, May, Ran Fan, and Fu.

Pure awesome.

Man, I am so incredibly happy these characters were finally animated - and also Major General Armstrong, who shows up somewhat later. More than that, though, I'm happy that the manga's fantastic story is animated here from start to finish, with very few changes or exclusions. This is it, everyone. This is Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist in anime form.

In my opinion, nothing can ever really match the original manga's hearty and badass style and humor, but this sure does come pretty darn close!

I will be buying the series once there's a complete box set. Most definitely.
