Avatar Fanvid
Jan. 10th, 2010 01:22 pmFor Avatar fans who found the parallel journeys of Aang and Zuko interesting, this is a vid you really might enjoy. It's very well done.

Fanfic Ramblings - sort of
Jan. 8th, 2010 11:28 amI really want to more fanfic for Avatar (I sort of have a plot that I was turning around in my head), but I just can't scrounge up the inspiration to actually start on it. I just want someone to write it for me so I can read it. I actually got pretty far into one fanfic and then couldn't figure out where to take it. I like parts of it, but I don't know what to do now. And I don't know if I want to post any of it for feedback or help.
I forget when I got so anxious about sharing my stuff with others. It just seems... I don't know. Embarrassing, almost. I think too much.
I also kind of want to write something Sokka/Ty Lee just for the potential and because I can find decent Sokka/Suki and Sokka/Toph easily, but this pairing is pretty sparse. I don't have a plot idea, though. And I want to write Aang/Katara like mad, but... yeah.
I think my main qualm with writing Avatar (and sharing it) is the fact that I don't feel like I know the world it's set in well enough to do it. I feel insecure somehow. I love that world and all its detail and richness, and I don't think I could really do it justice.
I really wish I could, though.

Female Character Hatred
Dec. 28th, 2009 10:58 amMore digging through old Avatar discussion posts... I found a rant against Katara's character. Now, Katara isn't my favorite character, but she's at least as well-developed as any of the others, and she is actually pretty neat. The story went out of its way to provide her with the opportunity to learn healing specifically so that she could reject it and learn to fight instead. She may not exactly be a revolutionary female protagonist, but at least she has a believably flawed personality, a strong will, and a desire to fight and protect those she loves that is as strong as any male character's.
The person who posted the rant is one step above "KATARA SUCKS OMG" (and it's a very small step). The main point of the rant: Katara is a "poorly written, blob of cliche" while all the male characters are wonderfully developed. If the OP posted this without expecting any dissention, then I believe they are a moron. Personally, I think they were looking for wank. Several commenters agree with me.
In any case, the rant can be found here: http://community.livejournal.com/avatar_fans/437135.html
It quickly turns to wank, and was even featured on Fandom Wank, but there were some great comments coming from people responding to the rant that I wholly agree with and would like to quote here. They all make the same basic point, but I couldn't resist quoting all of them.
"This kind of rant is what irritates me. Not so much because I, personally, love Katara, but because this just shows that no matter how well written or how well rounded a female character is, they are always always heavily (and mostly unfairly) criticized."
Source: http://community.livejournal.com/avatar_fans/437135.html?thread=6935439#t6935439
"I get tired of reading posts like these-- I see them in every fandom, from Naruto to Gundam Wing. Usually comming from female fans who display this bizarre venom against the main female character. If the main female is smart or capable or strong, she's a Mary Sue. If she's got character flaws or actually acts her age sometimes, she's stupid or insane."
Source: http://community.livejournal.com/avatar_fans/437135.html?thread=6948495#t6948495
"I hate seeing this kind of rant on fandom communities - where female characters are mercilessly bashed for traits that a male character would be considered as having a lot of character depth."
Source: http://community.livejournal.com/avatar_fans/437135.html?thread=6963343#t6963343
This isn't exactly new or anything (female fans have been bashing female characters since fandom existed), but I felt like it was a good opportunity to post something about it.
I've noticed it in shipping more than anything. To use an Avatar example: the majority of Zuko/Katara fans hate Mai (Zuko's canon love interest) with a freakin' unholy passion. And why, you ask? Because she loves Zuko. Holy hot damn, if that's a crime, you're ALL guilty, bitches!
I've also noticed that, although there is some hatred of Aang (Katara's canon love interest), he's typically treated with more respect. Is it because there's Toph available to shove him off on while Mai has no one (at least not for strictly het shippers)? Possible, but I think it's more related to this tendency of females to hate hate HATE the woman who "steals" the man away from her. It's kind of sad.

Avatar Comic of DOOM
Dec. 16th, 2009 07:18 pmSomeone has GOT to know where this comic disappeared to. Seriously. I *have* to read this. I am just so masochistic that I have to somehow track this down and read through the whole damn thing.
Even if I liked any of these pairings in this comic, I would still be in awe of the epic fail that this appears to be. Go ahead: click the link and read the summary. Even if you haven't seen Avatar, just do it. Then, if you have a moment, scan through the tropes. And try to tell me - with a straight face - that you think that this would somehow make a good story.
The picture of Toph in the title image makes me want to weep for her character. Compare that image to these and you can probably tell why. I don't mind the Toph/Aang pairing, but it's only really interesting if Toph is at least marginally in character. It doesn't look like this person even tried.
I don't know that I even need to talk about the anti-feminist stereotypes here. Really. Avatar is a great series for strong, independent female characters. This comic appears to be attempting to dismantle that as much as it possibly can.
Suki should be glad she was shipped off on a bus for this one. At least her dignity's still intact.

Randomness!
Dec. 15th, 2009 08:01 pmI watched the Avatar episode 'The Firebending Masters' again today. Dragons are so awesome. And I can't get enough of Zuko and Aang doing the dance.
Man, dragons are cool. Zuko and Aang and the manly dance of the dragons!
Here, have a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTE1k7xjrCE

Avatar Season Three and Final Impressions
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:45 amSo, as you might have noticed from last night's post, Cody and I watched the finale episodes of Avatar last night.
( Thoughts )
What a ride with this series! It had everything it needed: a well-developed setting, interesting powers and abilities, awesome fight scenes, a fantastic plot, and wonderful, wonderful characters. I am seriously blown away. I don't think I've felt quite so impressed with a series in a long, long time. It's just... everything I want in a show.
EDIT:
herongale has a much better analysis of Avatar's ending that I completely agree with.

EDIT:
OH MY FREAKIN' GOD!!!!!
Azula and... and Zuko! Lightning! And Sokka, and the airship, and OMG! Toph! Metal suit! Suki comes back! Flying! Katara uses the water, and... and the White Lotus! Bumi! Pakku! Jeong-Jeong! Sokka's swordmaster dude! IROH! WAH!
AANG AND THE GIANT LION-TURTLE AGFJKDFLSADJFKDSLC...
Tomorrow I will have a coherent response. I promise.

Dec. 4th, 2009 09:19 amTonight, Cody and I will watch the four-part finale of Avatar. This is it - the end of the series! I'm both excited that I'm going to see it, and sad that it will all be over. I'm sure the final battle will be epic. I expect to see Aang take down Ozai while Zuko battles his crazy sister. And it had better be awesome, because the buildup has been incredible!
One final note: since joining the group, Zuko has gone on a private journey with Aang (one episode), Sokka (two episodes), and Katara (one episode). Toph only got a thirty-second clip where he burned her feet and a conversation during intermission on that play - and all Suki got was an extremely awkward moment outside of Sokka's tent.
Cleary Sokka is Zuko's favorite. He should try to make it less obvious, though.

Female Villains - Azula
Dec. 3rd, 2009 09:07 amJust reading this rant about female villains and the lack of good ones. She talks about female villains who don't quite make the cut, who weren't iconic or villainous enough, who were lackeys and not real villains, and so on and so forth.
I'm not going to touch on the whole idea of doing specials on Heroes, Villains, and Vixens and lumping ALL female characters (evil or good) into the goddamn Vixens category, because we all know how stupid that is and
divalion covers that in her the very first part of her essay.
I was thinking as I read the rant that most of the qualities she is looking for can be found in Azula, Avatar's villain.
( Thoughts Under Here )

Dec. 2nd, 2009 11:00 amThis article makes me want to cry every time I read it. It makes me angry and sad, because it's true and it's happening right now, and people ignore it. Or convince themselves that it's not happening, or it's not real, or it's a lie. Or they find it funny - because maybe someone made a joke, or maybe it was used in a humorous way on Family Guy or South Park, and if TV says it's okay to laugh at it, why shouldn't we?
I think the best way to help change this attitude is to be aware and to encourage others to be aware.

Avatar - Fourth Impressions
Nov. 28th, 2009 11:37 amAvatar - Fourth Impression
I knew I'd be doing this.
So yeah, only eight more episodes of Avatar to go, and LOTS OF STUFF HAPPENED OMG.
1. Zuko is good now! But still angry! Just... hiding it better.
2. Azula taunting Sokka with Suki! OMG! Poor Sokka! And poor Suki, wherever she is...
3. Zuko and Aang at the ruins. "Stop cheating off me!" Nice. I think they have great careers as professional dancers ahead of them. Wish I could learn moves that quickly.
4. Aang x Katara kiss! Twice, even! (okay, the first time was a daydream, but whatever) Why has this not been discussed? I mean, yeah, they're busy, but COME ON! DISCUSS! ANGST! KISS AGAIN? I DUNNO, DO SOMETHING!
5. Iroh busts HIMSELF out of prison. DUDE. He gets more awesome every time I see him (or don't see him in this case because Zuko goes all the way there to redeem himself by helping his uncle and he's pretty much "don't need yo help, suckah!" Awesome!)
6. When I'm done watching, someone needs to rec me good fic for Aang x Katara. And Zuko x Mai. And Sokka x Suki. And Sokka x Toph. And Sokka x Ty Lee. Okay... Sokka x Anyone. I don't care!
7. The whole invasion was awesome from start to finish! And the end of it... OMG! Makes me want to cry. Just like Avatar Roku's past. Aaaagh... not crying. Not crying. Really...
8. Bloodbending is fucking creepy! But not as creepy as that creepy old lady. Eek.
9. Dragons are awesome. That is all that needs to be said. Dragons. Awesome.
I knew I'd be doing this.

Avatar - Third Impressions
Nov. 26th, 2009 09:23 amFive episodes into season three! So, it may be too early to be making the impressions post, but whatever. Maybe I'll have two for this season. We'll see.
1. Aang has hair! His head looks bigger now. It's like it's the same size as everyone else's - imagine that! Now we need to see all of them bald.
2. Sokka + Rainbow = OTP forever and ever!!!
3. Zuko and Mai and their completely random and out of nowhere "HI WE R IN LUV NAO LULZ". I love it. No, I'm serious. This couple is freakin' awesome, just like I thougth it would be! Angry boy x sarcastic girl = win. The scene at the party where she sends him off for food had Cody and me in hysterics. Just the tone of their voices. Emo teens!
4. Best line so far of the above pairing: "You're so beautiful when you hate the world."
5. Beach volleyball is serious business, yo.
6. Are there seriously no therapists in the world of Avatar??? 'Cause, y'know, they kinda need them. Especially Azula.
7. Iroh is BUFF! Holy hell! And a sneaky bugger. But we knew that already. Stupid Zuko, making him cry...
8. Aang and Katara dancing = HAWT.
9. Why does Zuko's assassin have automail? And yeah, the forehead-eye is weird too, but seriously. Automail?
Thus far season three is even better than season two. Which was even better than season one. Which was pretty damn good! I am pleased.

Avatar Season Two
Nov. 24th, 2009 11:21 amYesterday, Cody and I watched the last two episodes of Avatar season two.
( Thoughts )
One final thought: I'm really looking forward to watching the 'Women of Avatar' feature on the last DVD in season three. So many awesome and cunning and strong and wonderful female characters in this series. It's great to watch!

Four years ago today, I asked the man of my dreams out for coffee. Now, I love him more than ever. Every year we've spent together is different, but especially this last one. We travelled to another continent, bought a house, and are planning our upcoming wedding.
But for today, we went out for coffee again.

More Avatar Stuff
Nov. 18th, 2009 10:17 pmHalfway through season two of Avatar. Very good. Couldn't stop watching. Even Cody kept saying 'next episode' after each one ended.
1. Toph is JUST AS AWESOME AS EVERYONE SAYS SHE IS. All other girls in the series < Toph. By far.
2. Sokka is still my favorite, though, damnit!
3. Suki! I love the Kyoshi warriors... I think I may have found my Sokka ship here. Really liking their interaction.
4. I FREAKIN' LOVE TY LEE! She is second only to Toph for female awesome-ness! I also kind of think she would be a good ship for Sokka, too. Ehe...
5. Why is Jet back? Loser.
6. Is it just me or has the series gotten progressively more epic?
7. Zuko is an angst bitch and needs to accept it. It's the first step towards recovery.
8. Iroh is teh awesome. "No, she's crazy and needs to go down." YES!
9. I would like to see Mai paired with Zuko if only because Ms Lacks-Emotions and Mr Too-Much-Emotion would be an amusing combination.
10. Azula is a freak.
11. WHERE IS APPA??????
Gah.

Avatar Season One
Nov. 17th, 2009 10:48 amLast night, Cody and I watched the last four episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender season one.
( Thoughts, as promised )
This series is definitely going to be a favorite. I'm glad we bought the box sets. Can't wait to watch it on the 52" with the surround sound!

Cody and I have watched 11 episodes of Avatar so far. I really want to watch more. He's sleeping right now; just got home from his night shift three hours ago. So... we can't. But I really want to. This is one of those series I could totally marathon.
I don't want to go into a lot of detail with my thoughts until I finish the first season - I'll try to do a proper review at that point. But I will say a few things.
1. I like all of the characters who recurr on a regular basis. Even Zuko and Uncle Iroh, despite the fact that they are kinda on the evil side.
2. Sokka needs more love. He is awesome and has most of the best lines so far. It kind of sucks that he doesn't get a big piece of the action, not being a bender and all. Hopefully this will be corrected later. He's probably my favorite character, too.
3. Aang is just too freakin' adorable. What a sweetie! I hope it'll go into his past more. I suspect he's going to end up being more than just 'that happy-go-lucky kid who's going to stumble his way into saving the world'?
4. Katara is pretty cool. Usually characters with her personality type don't leave much impression on me. I really like her, though. She's got more zest to her than the atypical "responsible female".
5. Zuko has a bad haircut. And... I hope the scar will be explained at some point. Other than that, he seems... honorable? I wouldn't be surprised if a change of heart was in store for him later on.
6. I haven't figured out if Iroh is really crafty or starting to go senile. Or both.
7. I really liked those warrior girls in the one episode! I was hoping at least the one would come with them and maybe become Sokka's love interest. Bleh. Oh well. If he does get a love interest, she'd better be badass.
8. Seems obvious to me that Aang and Katara are going to be each others' love interest. It's very cute. Given that I'm marrying a guy two years younger than me, though, I might have a bit of a soft spot for this dynamic. And adolescent romances are just so adorable.
9. I like this world that's been set up - it's very colorful and well designed. And I like the story. Overall, I'm very happy to be watching this. It's cute and funny and has some decent action. Very much looking forward to more!
