So last night Cody and I went with a bunch of our friends to do the prerequisites for an endgame boss battle in FFXIV. After we'd done all of that, we decided to try the actual battle. Just to see what it was like, because there was no way we'd be able to beat it with our party setup.

Because we were all tired and having a lot of fun in the chat... the result was this.

So awesome.

Note: my character is Brynne Lagaao. Cody's is Messenjari Ankou.

I have gotten really lazy about posting entries... Oh well. My life right now consists of work, cosplay meetings, and Final Fantasy XIV. It's keeping me busy enough.

I am also in the process of reading a series of books recommended to me by [personal profile] yukinoomoni. I think it's referred to as the "Heroes" series by fans, but it doesn't seem like there is a series title. The first book is called "Resenting the Hero", and it is by Moira J. Moore.

I am currently reading book four, so obviously I like the series.

Review under cut )

Overall, what would I say about this series? It's good. The plot is solid, the characters are fun, the world is interesting and well-crafted, and there is a strong narrative.

Highly recommended!

This is a very informative video about ACTA.

Another article with more information about ACTA can be found here.

This is the only petition I have seen against it.

I went and saw the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie today with my parents and one of my sisters. I was the only person in our group who hadn't yet read the book. After the movie was over, and we were out in the theater lobby, my sister asked me if seeing the movie made me want to read the book.

My answer is cut for spoilers )

This is probably one of the many reasons why, if I were to ever try to get a story published, it would never be mainstream adult-oriented fiction.

Cody and I hosted a fantastic New Years party last night with some great friends. Good times were had by all, so it was a success! Quiz, of course, stayed well away from the activity, but Hunter was in his element and got lots of attention (and tidbits).

2011 has been a year full of ups and downs. I'm sure I could go through my journal and pinpoint some key moments, but I don't think I will bother. I did notice that last year I didn't post any New Year's resolutions.

This year I will.

I was thinking about it a bit, and was considering making one of my goals 'weight loss', but then I decided that, y'know what, that's not really the important thing. The thing about losing weight was that it made me feel better about myself, and that's really the result I want. So this year I am resolving to improve my self-image and become happier with myself. I may have to make some improvements in my lifestyle to achieve this, and it's probably a goal that cannot be accomplished in only a year, but I believe it is worthwhile.

I'm also going to try and resolve to write more. Ehe... We'll see how that goes. But I would really like to finish either Game Over or Piece of a Legend - or both.

Holidays

Dec. 28th, 2011 08:27 am
silverthunder: (Ty Lee - :))
Here's hoping everyone had a good holiday! Mine was really busy, but overall pretty good. We had three turkey dinners in a row; one at my parents' house, one at Cody's parents' house, and one at Cody's grandmother's house. Then the next night we went out for burgers and a movie (the new Sherlock Holmes - which was fantastic, by the way).

Cody got me a newly released Fullmetal Alchemist figure. It is Ed, and he comes with two different expressions (cocky and cynical), two different automail arms (with blade and without), two different torsos (shirt on or halfway ripped off), and a detachable ripped cloak. It is epic and awesome. I will be setting that up soon.

This is what it looks like.

I got Cody two figures of bikini-clad anime girls, but neither one is as awesome as the one he got me. That's probably because neither of them are Ed. Too bad for them. I also got him a game (Lost in Blue 2), so hopefully that makes up for the lack of awesome.

Today I'm back to work and back to working out. My bridesmaid dress fit perfectly last Thursday, so I have to shake off the holiday weight in the two and a half weeks before my sister's wedding. I'm feeling pretty confidant, though.

DW!

So, my first official Dreamwidth post! This site is actually really nice to work with. I've joined a few communities (they are pretty sparse right now, but I think once DW has implemented their community import feature, that will start to change) and friended a few people who have migrated or who have been here all along.

I'm feeling fairly positive about this place. Not totally leaving LJ yet (too many friends and communities still there), but I'm I'm thinking I might upgrade to a paid account and start making this my main journal. I want to wait until the holidays are over before making that decision, though, because I don't want it to be based on a knee-jerk reaction.
silverthunder: (Sokka - WHAAAAAT?)
Okay. Not sure if this is true or not, but I recommend that anyone who has made payments to LJ in the past but since turned auto-renew off check their settings and make sure it hasn't been inadvertently turned back on.

This may be a hoax or just someone being paranoid, but it doesn't hurt to be careful!

Dreamwidth

silverthunder: (Howard - My fandom is straight. Really.)
For anyone who is annoyed with the latest LJ fuck-up, right now Dreamwidth is offering free memberships that don't require codes (I think this will last until the end of December).

I've created myself a free journal (http://silverthunder.dreamwidth.org) and did some puttering around. The interface seems nice and simple and friendly. You can even import your current journal to their site, including all userpics, tags, and custom friends groups. They also give you the option to crosspost any entries you post there to LiveJournal (this is convenient if you have friends who don't want to move).

Best of all, they are ad-free, using the old user-based model that LiveJournal used to have! This is looking awfully tempting to me. I might even subscribe as a full paid user and start making all of my posts from there. We'll see how I feel in the next week or so.

If anyone else on my FL makes an account, please let me know your username - or drop by and friend me if you prefer.
silverthunder: (Howard - Frazzled)
Haven't been posting much lately. Work has been stressful because it's vacation time and thus there is a lot of scrambling around trying to get things done or just make sure those of us not going on vacation are going to get things done while the others are away. If I had no conscience, I would probably take a last minute vacation for all of this coming week, because it is going to suck mightily.

It really doesn't feel like Christmas yet. I have all of my shopping done, but it's felt like even more of a pain than usual, and I have been forgetting all kinds of small things and stressing out over it, and just generally feeling worn out. I'm... mainly just looking forward to the time off. At this point, I'd almost rather spend it hiding out at home than doing any kind of celebrating.

Hopefully on Friday I'll be more in the mood. Hopefully. We'll see.

Anyway, to break away from all of the doom and gloom above, I want to say happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] catia, because I forgot yesterday... Hope your day was awesome!

So apparently someone leaked the Avatar: Legend of Korra opening video! And it looks utterly awesome!

Go look!

I am so excited for this! Wish I knew when it would start airing!

I just made a community for Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky), because the fact that there wasn't one already really got to me. If I end up being the only member, so be it. But I'll promote it here even though I don't think anyone on my FL has played it.

silverthunder: (Cloud - My angst is cute)
So, the first OVA for Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky) was released two days ago. I'm really hoping someone picks it up and subs it, because I love the game so much. I'd also buy the OVA in a heartbeat if it were released officially, without even having seen it first. The characters of the game were so fun, and the story was really engaging. I definitely want to support more anime being made of them.

... Although I'd really prefer a FULL SERIES, y'know, so that the entire story can be animated as opposed to just a part of it. I can totally see this OVA ending up like the Tales of Phantasia OVA, which is too bad.

I am also still anxiously waiting for the game's sequel to be released, although articles like this one make me nervous about its prospects (seriously, why isn't everyone buying this game? It's awesome!). One thing I'm worried about is that I'll ruin the game when watching the anime OVA, since it's based on SC (Second Chapter), which I obviously haven't played yet. But I don't care, because I want to see more of this world and these characters so much that I will immediately watch/play any new material I can get of them.

In completely unrelated news, I've gotten to the halfway point with the next chapter of Game Over, which of course means it's stalled and I have zero motivation to work on it any more. This seems to be the pattern with new chapters. However, I have formed a tentative plan for the next chapter and a half, and then I am thinking it will probably be two more chapters after that before the story ends.

When I started this beast, I originally was thinking of sequels and one-shot funny stories and possibly even a new character and everything. In the course of my struggles with the story, I have decided that there is no way in hell that is ever happening. Once it's over and I feel like I have done it enough justice, THAT IS THE END.

... Of course, knowing me and decision-making, that could totally change.
silverthunder: (Avatar - OMGHUGS)
Okay, this movie looks awesome!

I think I will wait to read the books until after I have seen it. Don't want to spoil myself, because it looks like it will make an exciting film.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

Okay. Consider I don't live in the States, sharing this is probably the only thing I can do - although I'm not sure how many people actually don't know about it yet.

http://vimeo.com/31100268

This is massively disturbing to me on any number of levels. Worst case scenario, this is looking like the road to mass censorship. I may be overreacting, but... whoa. If I'm not, this is freaky.

Think about how many things on the Internet there are that reference some form of entertainment. It's... basically everything I enjoy doing on the 'net at all.

This is backwards thinking regardless of how you look at it.
silverthunder: (Nezumi and Shion - Dance with me)
So, I finished watching No. 6 just now - watched the last two episodes while doing my workout today. It was pretty good! Considering they only had 11 episodes to deliver a plot like that, the pacing actually really wasn't bad, and the character development was decent all around.

One small nig: Shion's transition in the last two episodes felt a little forced. It wasn't terrible, but I felt they could've done with another episode to ease into it. Doing that might've slowed down the action, though, so there was probably a trade-off somewhere.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series. It was subtle in all the right ways, and there was always enough going on to keep my interest engaged. The hinted-at romantic triangle between Nezumi, Shion, and Safu was lovely, and never threatened to overwhelm the plot. The ending was a little abrupt, and could've been stretched out a bit more, but I still felt satisfied with it when it was over.

Honestly, I would have liked to have seen No. 6 as a 24-episode series just to develop the setting and the characters more, and to watch the way they interacted. It did well with the time it had, but I feel like there could've been so much more.
silverthunder: (Kurapika - Victim of fangirls)
So, I'm watching the new Hunter X Hunter anime, which is a redo of the original anime with spiffy new animation and colors and stuff. It also follows the manga more closely. Which means episodes 1-8 from the old series are now 1-4 in the new series. Lots of filler was cut. The new voice actors for the four main characters sound somewhat like the old voice actors, but you can tell the differences.

I stopped following the manga ages ago, because (in my opinion) it started to meander and just got annoying to read. I wonder if the new anime will animate some of the stuff the old one didn't cover. I'm not too keen on the chimera ants arc, which I thought was a huge waste of time. It went on forever, and it felt like the mangaka was just stalling because he couldn't think of how to properly continue any of his original storylines. Even now that it's over, from what I've heard they're just starting another new story that has nothing to do with anything, and introducing a whole lot of new characters.

Meh. Bring back Leorio and Kurapika, and then maybe I'll bother to give it another try.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Wow... just wow. The fact that this is even being considered is mind-boggling in and of itself. That it would actually pass... holy crap. What century is this?
silverthunder: (Laccus - Shimmer)
It's been almost a month since I last posted anything here. I am mainly posting this entry out of some obscure guilt. Not that me not posting is inconveniencing anyone, but I still somehow feel guilty for not updating.

They released chocobos in FFXIV, so Cody and I have started playing again. I forgot how much fun that game could be. The updates they've made to it have really helped a lot, too.

I'm also playing Super Mario RPG, which is a really goofy game but kind of fun as well. Still haven't made any progress in FFVIII. I don't feel any enthusiasm towards that game at all. Maybe this will change once I force myself to give it another chance. I guess we'll see.

I would really love to write something, but my motivation to do so is pretty well zero. These days, I feel like I just can't be bothered to try. I feel that way about a lot of things, actually. Not sure if this is because work leaves me feeling drained or if there is some other reason, but it's hard to put any energy into actually caring. Meh.

Oh well.
