Sora no Kiseki comm
Nov. 28th, 2011 08:57 amI just made a community for Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky), because the fact that there wasn't one already really got to me. If I end up being the only member, so be it. But I'll promote it here even though I don't think anyone on my FL has played it.

Nov. 27th, 2011 11:11 amSo, the first OVA for Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky) was released two days ago. I'm really hoping someone picks it up and subs it, because I love the game so much. I'd also buy the OVA in a heartbeat if it were released officially, without even having seen it first. The characters of the game were so fun, and the story was really engaging. I definitely want to support more anime being made of them.
... Although I'd really prefer a FULL SERIES, y'know, so that the entire story can be animated as opposed to just a part of it. I can totally see this OVA ending up like the Tales of Phantasia OVA, which is too bad.
I am also still anxiously waiting for the game's sequel to be released, although articles like this one make me nervous about its prospects (seriously, why isn't everyone buying this game? It's awesome!). One thing I'm worried about is that I'll ruin the game when watching the anime OVA, since it's based on SC (Second Chapter), which I obviously haven't played yet. But I don't care, because I want to see more of this world and these characters so much that I will immediately watch/play any new material I can get of them.
In completely unrelated news, I've gotten to the halfway point with the next chapter of Game Over, which of course means it's stalled and I have zero motivation to work on it any more. This seems to be the pattern with new chapters. However, I have formed a tentative plan for the next chapter and a half, and then I am thinking it will probably be two more chapters after that before the story ends.
When I started this beast, I originally was thinking of sequels and one-shot funny stories and possibly even a new character and everything. In the course of my struggles with the story, I have decided that there is no way in hell that is ever happening. Once it's over and I feel like I have done it enough justice, THAT IS THE END.
... Of course, knowing me and decision-making, that could totally change.

Hunger Games
Nov. 20th, 2011 11:57 amOkay, this movie looks awesome!
I think I will wait to read the books until after I have seen it. Don't want to spoil myself, because it looks like it will make an exciting film.

Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.
Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.
Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Nov. 17th, 2011 08:21 pmOkay. Consider I don't live in the States, sharing this is probably the only thing I can do - although I'm not sure how many people actually don't know about it yet.

This is massively disturbing to me on any number of levels. Worst case scenario, this is looking like the road to mass censorship. I may be overreacting, but... whoa. If I'm not, this is freaky.
Think about how many things on the Internet there are that reference some form of entertainment. It's... basically everything I enjoy doing on the 'net at all.
This is backwards thinking regardless of how you look at it.

No. 6 completed
Nov. 4th, 2011 06:56 pmSo, I finished watching No. 6 just now - watched the last two episodes while doing my workout today. It was pretty good! Considering they only had 11 episodes to deliver a plot like that, the pacing actually really wasn't bad, and the character development was decent all around.
One small nig: Shion's transition in the last two episodes felt a little forced. It wasn't terrible, but I felt they could've done with another episode to ease into it. Doing that might've slowed down the action, though, so there was probably a trade-off somewhere.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series. It was subtle in all the right ways, and there was always enough going on to keep my interest engaged. The hinted-at romantic triangle between Nezumi, Shion, and Safu was lovely, and never threatened to overwhelm the plot. The ending was a little abrupt, and could've been stretched out a bit more, but I still felt satisfied with it when it was over.
Honestly, I would have liked to have seen No. 6 as a 24-episode series just to develop the setting and the characters more, and to watch the way they interacted. It did well with the time it had, but I feel like there could've been so much more.

Hunter X Hunter new series
Oct. 28th, 2011 06:23 pmSo, I'm watching the new Hunter X Hunter anime, which is a redo of the original anime with spiffy new animation and colors and stuff. It also follows the manga more closely. Which means episodes 1-8 from the old series are now 1-4 in the new series. Lots of filler was cut. The new voice actors for the four main characters sound somewhat like the old voice actors, but you can tell the differences.
I stopped following the manga ages ago, because (in my opinion) it started to meander and just got annoying to read. I wonder if the new anime will animate some of the stuff the old one didn't cover. I'm not too keen on the chimera ants arc, which I thought was a huge waste of time. It went on forever, and it felt like the mangaka was just stalling because he couldn't think of how to properly continue any of his original storylines. Even now that it's over, from what I've heard they're just starting another new story that has nothing to do with anything, and introducing a whole lot of new characters.
Meh. Bring back Leorio and Kurapika, and then maybe I'll bother to give it another try.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.
Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.
Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.
Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.
What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.
The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.
So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.
If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.
What to do?
- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.
- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.
- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.
- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Oct. 11th, 2011 09:34 amIt's been almost a month since I last posted anything here. I am mainly posting this entry out of some obscure guilt. Not that me not posting is inconveniencing anyone, but I still somehow feel guilty for not updating.
They released chocobos in FFXIV, so Cody and I have started playing again. I forgot how much fun that game could be. The updates they've made to it have really helped a lot, too.
I'm also playing Super Mario RPG, which is a really goofy game but kind of fun as well. Still haven't made any progress in FFVIII. I don't feel any enthusiasm towards that game at all. Maybe this will change once I force myself to give it another chance. I guess we'll see.
I would really love to write something, but my motivation to do so is pretty well zero. These days, I feel like I just can't be bothered to try. I feel that way about a lot of things, actually. Not sure if this is because work leaves me feeling drained or if there is some other reason, but it's hard to put any energy into actually caring. Meh.
Oh well.

More FFVII
Sep. 13th, 2011 09:52 pmSo I finished Final Fantasy VII! Beat Ruby Weapon (another golden Chocobo! I named my first one Pippin, so this one was Merry) and then Emerald Weapon (second set of Master Materia get!). Emerald Weapon was the hardest battle in the game! Sephiroth was a wuss by comparison (W-Summon and Knights of the Round finished him off pretty quick - didn't even need to use Mime).
I found some of the FMVs on YouTube and downloaded them to put on my iPod. Hehe. (I still cry at THAT SCENE, though)
I also watched Last Order, which was... okay. The battle scenes were cool. There was some messing around with continuity and such, and the ending was, uh, abrupt. But overall, not a complete waste of time. Catatonic!Cloud is always fun, I guess. Zack is pretty cool. Poor guy.
Cody talked me into playing FFVIII next. It's okay so far. I am just still in that euphoric stage of new obsession with FFVII right now, and there is no room for new things. So the new game gets about maybe 2% of my interest and enthusiasm. Oh well.
On the hunt for good Cloud-centric fic!

So, yeah, almost finished playing Final Fantasy VII. Just the Ruby and Emerald Weapons and the final boss to go (I'll beat them all. Eventually).
I realize I'm probably at least ten years too late playing this game, but whatever. It was good.
Some things to note:
1. Sephiroth is a douche. I mean, seriously? Why does everyone love him so much? I can't wait to take him out. Asshole.
2. I got to like Cloud much, much more after finding out his REAL backstory (what can I say? I'm a sucker for the underdog)
3. AT THE END OF THE FIRST DISC? WTF? I mean, I knew it happened, but ONLY ONE DISC IN? Also, I cried...
4. Red XIII kicks so much ass. He pretty well never left my party.
5. I think I would be perfectly happy to never see another Chocobo again...
6. The Gold Saucer music is not that good the first time you hear it, much less the millionth.
7. Must. Read. Fanfic...
Sooo, FFVII fans on my FL. Cloud/Tifa? Cloud/Aeris? Cloud/someone else? Convince me!

Reading and books
Sep. 1st, 2011 09:54 amOkay, this response article to a piece on why boys aren't reading enough (published in the NY Times) is so full of win. It's long, but a really good read, and it says a lot of things that I wish more people would read and take to heart (I find it incredibly sad that more people will read the original article than its response).
There are some gems in the comments, too: I particularly liked JupiterPluvius's response to Jackie Snyder's comment. I recommend reading the whole way down if you find the article interesting, because there's a lot of good stuff here.

I am currently five episodes into an anime series called No.6. I was going to wait until the series had finished airing and I'd seen all of it before I posted about it, but I changed my mind after stumbling across this article.
I think this really hits on what I find so refreshing about this series, and why I think most of the people on my friends list would probably enjoy it. The series is classified as science fiction. Does it seem like it's leaning towards a relationship between its two (male) protagonists? Yes. But like the review I linked to says, this is a fairly mainstream sci-fi series that doesn't bill itself as shounen-ai. I think this is probably the first time I've seen an anime that seems likely to contain a m/m relationship but doesn't really define itself by that fact.
Regardless of whether it goes there in the end, I think this series will turn out to be a pretty good one. The BG music is good, the animation is good, the story is engaging. If it doesn't pull its punches regarding its main relationship, it could be something awesome.
For those interested, you can view the opening video of the No. 6 anime here.

Harry Potter movie
Aug. 17th, 2011 09:04 amI don't think I've mentioned yet that Cody and I went to see the last Harry Potter movie a couple of weeks ago. It was really good - much better than the other movies in the series. I felt like the pacing was handled a lot better (although this may not be saying much, as I have always felt that the pacing in the HP movies was handled poorly). Cody said that he had a lot less trouble following what was going on, and only had a few questions for me after it was over.
My impressions? Well, it did rekindle my interest in the series as a whole, which is good. There were a couple of scenes where I would've preferred if they'd left it the way it was in the book, but other scenes where I liked the way they changed it for the movie.
Overall, I have the same feeling I did when I finished the book: I would really, really like to see some talented writer (doesn't have to be JKR) do the whole thing from Neville's perspective. I think I would get more into a series like that. Harry was okay and all, but... yeah.
Side note: while at Cos & Effect, I managed to pick up the 'Neville would have done it in 4 books' T-shirt. Heh.

Aug. 16th, 2011 11:07 amBack from Cos & Effect. It was a lot of fun, and way too short, as usual. The con was small-ish and a little different (it was a costume convention rather than an anime convention, so I found it lacking in a number of ways, but that's just because my interest in cosplay is pretty mild). The vendors were meh - but Twinbells Doujinshi was there, so yay! I spent all of my money at her booth, basically. I even found two Takumi/Akira doujinshi!
Other than that, we visited the mall and I got some manga at Sakura Media. The manga/anime sales at the actual con were pretty well non-existant, but Sakura Media had a decent selection. Cody and I even picked up some new games, so we'll be trying those out shortly.
This week is pretty well going to end up being devoted to cleaning up the house and yard since we're having a BBQ on Saturday as sort of a late birthday party for me. I have to go buy burgers, hot dogs, and fixings at some point as well... plus snacks... and cake... Heh.
Anyway, it will be good! Hopefully.

Our first date is in there! It is so cute, and I teared up reading it, because this was such a sweet gift.

Yesterday and today I spent some time looking for some good fantasy novels with m/m romance. Actually, I'd also be happy with good fantasy novels with m/f romance, but lately I've been in a BL mood, so that's what I've been looking for.
You have no idea how happy it would make me to find at least ONE m/m fantasy novel that is not taking itself so seriously! If it's not coated with a thick layer of angst (either plot or romance related, take your pick), it's smut with a fantasy backdrop.
And don't get me wrong, some of those books are awesome! But when I'm craving some lighthearted fantasy/romance with decent humor and just a bit of drama to make it interesting (wouldn't say no to the smut, either, as long as it wasn't the whole plot), man, this just doesn't cut it!
The angst, it is wide. Wide like the ocean. There is no crossing.
