The end?

Well, it looks like LJ is issuing a public apology and restoring journals that were removed in error. I haven't checked around to see which those include and which have stayed suspended, but it's a start.

NOTE: Skip to the last page and look at [livejournal.com profile] kazahaya's list of questions that still need to be addressed. Those really do seem fair, don't they? I wonder if LJ will provide answers.

This is a neat idea.

Just thought I'd post the link in case anyone was interested in joining.

On recent LJ events...

Thoughts?

Edit: More

Apparently it's not only fandom journals that are being targeted here. Journals designed as help and support for survivors of child abuse were also deleted with no warning, and for no good reason. Thus far, no one is admitting to the error. LJ blames these "Warriors of Innocense" and they blame LJ.

I'd say they're all idiots. Even all the "Warriors of Innocense" did was complain that LJ was hosting 'content containing pedoplia and incest' on their site, all you've done by stirring up this fuss is alert the real predators and make it harder for more intelligent and better organized groups to catch them. Even if all LJ did was delete the journals that the "Warriors of Innocense" pointed out, they didn't bother to check and see exactly what was on those journals, and that's ridiculous.

It reminds me of the big fanfiction.net mess years ago, only worse. A huge portion of the journals deleted were completely innocent. Lolita fashion communities? RPG villain journals? Support groups for survivors?

That blows me away. And the worst part is that LJ is not willing to admit that they've made a mistake in deleting the journals. How can you justify that? Seriously.

I love this song. And the anime that goes with it. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] herongale for bringing it to my attention (I find most of the series she recs are fantastic).

Since today is a day off for me, I'm going to try and do some reviews for a bunch of things I've finished watching but haven't had time to set my thoughts down for.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya )

Zettai Shounen )

Onegai Twins )

Princess Tutu )

Pretear )

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End )

And... I think that's it for reviews. For now.

Seen everywhere, but picked up first from [livejournal.com profile] hinotori. I so can't wait for this movie.

Apparently it's not a monkey any more... )

I'm seriously contemplating giving this Digimon fanfic a title, HTMLing it up, and posting it on FF.net a chapter at a time, with no warnings in the description about pairings, just to see if anyone flames me when they find out what's really going on.

WOOT!

After giving the subject some thought, I came to the conclusion that a proper magical boy in the style of most magical girls was really necessary. So, even though I'm not the greatest artist, I decided to draw one. It was kind of fun.

Everyone knows of the magical girl genre - is there a magical BOY genre?

I came up with this while at the pool. All kinds of strange thoughts come into your head when you're exercising with nothing to occupy your mind properly.

Guess which manga I am summarizing! )

Pretear

I am on episode eight of Pretear, and I love this series! It's not a fabulous piece of art or anything, but it's entertaining, and the characters have a lot of potential. I really wish it was longer so there'd be more development for all of the Knights and further exploration of some of the themes that so far it has only just touched on.

Thirteen episodes is not long enough for a series like this! I would gladly watch fifty or more! The characters are wonderful, and the heroine is one of the best I've seen. She is alternately strong and weak, and it's a lot of fun watching her antics.

I think this is the first time since Digimon Tamers where my favorite character in an anime series has been female. It doesn't generally happen with anime.

Plus, I can see why the title is often listed as 'The Legend of Snow White Pretear'. One of the themes in Snow White is jealousy and its consequences, and I can see it all over the place in here. Takako is a 'duh', but also Mawata and her mother - two less objectionable characters. I get the feeling that in the true style of magical girl anime, Himeno will somehow correct the villain's fall from grace and bring her back to the side of good, but that doesn't phase me. There's plenty of action, hilarity, and pretty costumes to keep me happy.

It's also true that this is a shoujo series which both genders can enjoy. I've been watching it from the start with Cody, and he is liking it too.

I want more than thirteen episodes! But I suppose the only way I'll get more Pretear is by purchasing the manga, which I intend to do once I get paid and feel a little richer.

Does anyone know of any good fanfics, doujinshi (I can't find any anywhere - it makes me sad), or anything for Pretear? Any pairing or no pairing, it's all good.

EDIT: I thought of something else which seems interesting. When I read 'The DaVinci Code', the thing which struck me most was the old belief that true spirituality could only be achieved through the union of the masculine and the feminine. I don't know if it was a deliberate thought on the creator's part, but you can see this theme in Pretear, because Himeno, who could be said to represent the sacred feminine, achieves her full power by merging with one of the Knights. Alone, the Knights have little power, and we see the result of the lone feminine power in Takako, who clearly represents chaos. Neither does much good without the other.

It's a neat sort of theme, and even if it wasn't deliberate, it only increases my enjoyment of the series.

Fic Meme

Writer's Meme: it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same. And by five, we apparently mean three.

... And by five people, it means 'tag no one and whoever wants to can do it'.

1. Piece of a Legend (Original - slash) - My masterpiece. I really love the story I decided on. This is probably my favorite out of everything I've written. I realize the 'coming of age' theme has been done many many times, but I never get tired of it and I wasn't really as overt as I could've been with it. There's a lot going on in this story, anyway. It's one of my few attempts at hidden meaning, and I think it's shaped up pretty good (though not totally completed yet and not posted on my site or Fiction Press). LINK

2. Believe It or Not (Digimon - Ken/Daisuke, Takeru/Hikari, Taichi/Yamato) - This one was never all that popular, but I love it. It's an AU fic (I wrote a LOT of those) based on certain fairy lore, which I am a sucker for. I love fairies and all Irish legends about them. The plot was very loosely based on 'The Hunter's Moon' by O.R. Melling, which I was a big fan of for a long time. I think everything turned out as I wanted it, and I can re-read it with pleasure. LINK

3. Going Under (Hikaru no Go - Akira/Hikaru) - The idea was just SO there. I wanted to play with it. I sometimes think the romantic interaction was iffy in this one, but the plot was everything I wanted it to be. I managed to actually tie it together pretty good. I wrote the thing, and it still gives me shivers sometimes, too. LINK

4. Howard, again (Uninhabited Planet Survive - no pairings, spoilers up to episode 43) - This one is so short, and SO simple, but there's something about it I like. It's the first ficlet I wrote for this series, a character exploration, but I think it captured what I wanted it to capture. I snuck a couple of things in there that some people might not notice, but that's okay. I was completely satisfied with it. LINK

5. Switch (Digimon Tamers - Jenrya/Takato, Hirokazu/Kenta, Ryo/Ruki) - It was just fun. I enjoyed every second of writing this fic, and I enjoy re-reading it. I think I did fairly well with the characterizations, and it more or less came out how I wanted it to. The interactions were a lot of fun, and everyone got to be fantastically confused by being stuck in the wrong bodies. I love it. LINK

One more, because it's a collab so it doesn't really fit in the above section:

6. Ground Level (Digimon - co-authored with [livejournal.com profile] girl_starfish - Taichi/Yamato, Ken/Daisuke, others) - It worked out so perfectly. I still like to read this one over again (though I mostly read Louise's parts). It was just so much fun to write, and the premise was so cool! I love everything we came up with for this, and just wish we'd both had time and inspiration to do the sequels we wanted to. LINK

Himeno from Pretear has fun facial expressions.

I made three new icons today.

I'm looking for more pictures of a certain costume of Himeno's from Pretear. My DVDs haven't arrived in the mail yet, and I don't want to have to spoil the series by skipping ahead and going through the relevant episode for screenshots. Can anyone help me out?

The costume I'm looking for is this one.
silverthunder: (Menori - So not impressed)
Has anyone bothered to go see 'Bridge to Terebithia'? If so, is it anything like the book at all? I'm not holding out much hope after seeing the previews. Evilness. That was a fantastic book.

Apparently 'The Dark is Rising' is next on the list of good books that are being bastardized in movie form. I've heard rumors of Americanization, Christianization, and general bad things. This is an European-based series with pagan themes and a mild undertone of criticism towards Christianity. I don't understand why anyone would think it was a good idea to try and give it Christian themes and make everyone American.

Then again, someone thought it was a good idea to make a story about friendship, imagination, and accepting loss into something about a wacky fantasy world that comes to life.

Argh.

After so many brilliant adaptions like 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe', it seems that now we are getting the backlash with companies who don't mind ripping apart a good story to cash in on the fantasy craze.

EDIT: There may be some hope for 'Bridge to Terabithia - apparently the previews were very misleading, and the director actually didn't think they were appropriate. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] feather_down for the info. I may go see this movie after all.

So yesterday was Valentines Day... I gave Cody a card that I made using a picture of the two of us, and he gave me a picture he drew from his most recent game (which I happen to like very much myself), Tales of the Abyss. It's Luke and Tear, and those who are interested can view it here.

I've finished several anime recently, including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Zettai Shounen, and Onegai Twins. I'll be randomly writing out what I thought of them later (not now, though, because I'm getting ready to head out to an IT Employer Panel at the college). I'm also watching several new ones, including Pretear (waiting for my DVD set to come in) and Scrapped Princess.

Most excellent.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] jupiterah2, my cousin just had a baby and named her Anika! You're not the only one in the city any more (that's assuming you were before... I don't know for sure).

Hmmm

One of my friends posted a link to this wank recently, and I'm not sure what exactly I'm thinking about it. Yes, the guy is a nutjob with the typical "if you don't like what I like, you're retarded" mentality. But he did make the post in his own journal rather than on a public forum the way most fandom clowns do. It's easy to justify spamming and posting mocking responses to someone when they make a post in some place public, because the assumption is that if you post in a public community, you are inviting discussion.

Can you justify spamming someone in their own journal when he or she has not posted their rant somewhere that would invite public discussion? I suppose it would be easy to say "well, he/she didn't make the post private, so why not?" But this person has not harmed you in any way with their craziness. They have not lashed out at you on a public forum or community. They are ranting, yes, but in their own space. You are the ones lashing out at this person, rather than the other way around. And doesn't that make you the bad person?

Any thoughts?

I went on chapters.ca and got myself caught up on all the manga I'm collecting. That means volumes 11 and 12 of Hunter X Hunter, 11 and 12 of Tsubasa Chronicles, 3 and 4 of D.Gray-Man, and I almost went for volume 3 of +Anima, but decided to wait on that one. The local store will probably have it in at some point.

Free shipping, and because of my Christmas gift cards, this set is costing me less than $20. Woot.

And now, stuff mainly for my own reference in list form.

Series I am collecting in English manga form and how many volumes I have so far:

+Anima (volumes 1-3)
D.Gray-Man (volumes 1-5)
D.N.Angel (volumes 1-11)
Digimon (first three seasons - are they ever going to put season 4 in manga form?)
Fullmetal Alchemist (volumes 1-13)
Hikaru no Go (volumes 1-9)
Hunter X Hunter (volumes 1-14)
Tsubasa Chronicles (volumes 1-12)

On my Current Watching list for anime, and which episode I'm on:

Kanon (episode 3)
Last Exile (episode 4)
Ouran High School Host Club (episode 22)
Scrapped Princess (episode 4)

On my To Watch list for anime:

D.Gray-Man (8 episodes watched)
Honey and Clover (1 episode watched)
Kyou Kara Maou (30-something episodes watched)
Magical Canan (1 episode watched)
Tsubasa Chronicles (17 episodes watched)

I think that's all. For now.
